Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to question specific calls from the chair umpire, following the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
