This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
