RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
