EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
